Three Charlotte Tables Worth Planning Around

A ten-table farm dining room, a steakhouse in an old church and NoDa’s Southern kitchen — the Charlotte reservations to make first.

Charlotte’s dining scene has quietly become one of the South’s best, and three rooms tell the story better than any. One is a ten-table farm dining room, one is a steakhouse inside an old church, and one is the Southern kitchen that anchors NoDa. Book these first.

Restaurant Constance keeps things intimate — a ten-table dining room in Wesley Heights cooking seasonal American food straight from area farms, with a silent projection of those very farms playing on the wall and Steely Dan on the speakers. Start with the rock-shrimp momo and the Parmesan–sea-salt pull-apart rolls with honey butter, and don’t skip the chocolate-miso tart. Dinner runs Tuesday through Saturday, 5 to 10.

Supperland is a Southern steakhouse inside a restored midcentury church in Plaza Midwood — the kitchen sits where the pulpit once stood. The move is ribeye or the whole roasted chicken off the 14-foot hickory-and-oak grill, with miso macaroni and cheese and broccoli in bone-marrow butter on the side. The speakeasy downstairs is a separate reservation, and worth it.

Haberdish brings Carolina cooking to NoDa on decorative china — fried chicken, deviled eggs and hushpuppies built for sharing. The room wears the neighborhood’s textile-mill history: seats upholstered in Cone Mills salvage denim, tables built from the building’s own rafters, beer taps made from old mill spindles. Lunch Tuesday through Friday, dinner Tuesday through Sunday, brunch on weekends.
