National Donut Day originates from a Chicago fundraiser by the Salvation Army in 1938 honoring women known as “lassies” who served doughnuts to soldiers on the front lines during World War 1. The donuts were often cooked in oil inside the metal helmets of American soldiers.
Nowadays, the food holiday is characterized by freebies, contests and limited edition pastries at bakeries across the country. Each year it’s celebrated on the first Friday of June. Here are some cool local options with National Donut Day specials.
